1066th -- Works In Progress

There will never be a moment in life when we can say we are perfect and
complete. We will never be perfect because we are flawed human beings.
We make mistakes numerous times every day and while we may strive to
become better, we will never be perfect and found not wanting. Mistakes
are a part of life and our mission as human beings is to learn the lessons
from those mistakes, apply what we've learned for our betterment and do
all that we can to not repeat the wrongs that have been done in the past.
Many times we get down on ourselves because of our many shortfalls and we
believe the lie that our future is now hindered because of our past. What
we must quickly realize is that with God a new beginning is always
possible. We may not believe in ourselves at any particular moment, but
God never fails to believe in us. He wishes for our latter days to be much
more blessed than our former beginnings.

Knowing that we will never reach perfection, we should do all that we can
with what we have to make our life significant. We should use every trial,
every setback, every lesson that was hard learned and use it to our
benefit. We shouldn't become stagnant and unproductive thinking that we
are of no use, but rather we should believe that our best days are ahead
of us. We must think of our life in a positive light and bless it with
our thoughts, with our words and with our actions. A quote that I like
says “Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for
they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch
your habits, for they become your character and watch your character, for
it becomes your destiny. What we think, we become.”

I believe we are to think highly of ourselves and see ourselves as worthy
to walk in uprightness and righteousness as children of the Most High
God. We should think highly of ourselves not because of who we are, but
because of Whose we are. We are children of the Most High God. We are
forgiven, we are redeemed, we are blessed and highly favored. Believe it
for yourself and see yourself worthy. You may not be perfect, but that's
okay because no one else is either. Perfection only belongs to God. He
is our Perfect Savior, our Perfect Redeemer, our Perfect Lord and Master.
As long as we know that God is Perfect, we can rest in His Perfection. We
can rest in His goodness, in His mercy, in His redemption and most
importantly we can rest in His Love that reaches from everlasting to
everlasting. Don't worry about reaching perfection. Simply strive to be
the best you that you can be.

I hope this message inspires and challenges your heart to see that you will
always have a second chance to become better and to do better in life.

WORKS IN PROGRESS

I snapped at my son today. In a moment of frustration I scolded him over
something trivial that I could have easily ignored. I saw the hurt in his
eyes after I did it and apologized to him. Afterwards, I gave him a hug,
reminded him of what a good son he is, and told him how proud I am of him.
Still, I wished I could have taken back what I said earlier.

Later in the day I was in the store getting a few items for dinner. An
elderly lady was stretching in vain to reach something on a high self. I
walked over and asked if I could help. She said, “Yes” and I got what she
needed down for her. She then thanked me for the helping hand and I told
her it was my pleasure. I left the store feeling both happier and closer
to God.

How do I reconcile that frustrated Father I was earlier in the day with
the smiling, good Samaritan I was later in the afternoon? The answer is
simple. I am still a work in progress. In truth, we are all works in
progress from the second of our birth to the moment of our death. We are
here to learn to love, to grow in love, to share our love and to become
one with our Heavenly Father’s love. It may seem simple, but it isn’t
always easy. It takes a lifetime too. That is why no matter how many times
we stumble and fall it is important to rise up, to ask God’s forgiveness,
to dust ourselves off and to begin again to love with all of our heart,
soul, mind and strength. At the end of our lives only one thing matters:
how much we loved.

I know that my son will forgive me for my short temper earlier today. I
know that God will forgive me too. Like everyone else I still have a lot
of work to do to become the person I want to be. Thankfully, God is
patient with me. I know too that the job of growing into our goodness can
mainly be done with laughter, smiles, and great joy. Yes, we are all works
in progress, but we still can have the time of our lives becoming better
for God.

By Joseph J. Mazzella

Read and meditate on these scriptures:

Psalm 40:1-4 “I waited patiently for the Lord; and He inclined unto me,
and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the
miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And He
hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see
it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord. Blessed is that man that maketh
the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside
to lies.”

Ezekiel 36:26-27 “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will
I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh,
and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put My spirit within
you, and cause you to walk in My statutes, and ye shall keep My judgments,
and do them.”

Jeremiah 31:3 “The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have
loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I
drawn thee.”

Isaiah 26:3-4 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed
on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for
in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength.”

All of these scriptures can be found in the King James Version Bible.
