271st -- Ice Cream: Good For The Soul

The pressures of life are constant and so we should have a light and merry
heart and know that God is with us and has everything under control. Never
allow yourself to get so serious that you forget the simple pleasures of
living and enjoying life.

I hope you are blessed by today's story.

ICE CREAM: GOOD FOR THE SOUL

Last week I took my children to a restaurant. My six-year-old son asked if
he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, "God is good. God is
great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets
us ice cream for dessert. And liberty and justice for all. Amen!"

Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman
remark, "That's what's wrong with this country. Kids today don't even know
how to pray. Asking God for ice cream. Why, I never!"

Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, "Did I do it wrong? Is
God mad at me"? As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific
job and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached
the table. He winked at my son and said, "I happen to know that God thought
that was a great prayer."

"Really?" my son asked.

"Cross my heart." Then in a theatrical whisper he added, indicating the
woman whose remark had started the whole thing, "Too bad she never asks God
for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes."

Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My son
stared at his for a moment and then did something I will remember the rest
of my life. He picked up his sundae and without a word, walked over and
placed it in front of the woman.

With a big smile he told her, "Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for
the soul sometimes, and my soul is good already."

The Bible says that for us to enter the kingdom of heaven, we must be as
little children. It is okay for us to get older physically, but we should
always have a light hearted spirit before the Lord and remember that He
sees us as His children. Never allow yourself to get so old in your spirit
that you stop enjoying and relishing the days that God has given you.

I encourage you to take time for yourself every day and do something that
will bring you Joy. It is easy for us to get down and discouraged because
of the trials of life, but we must recognize that victory is ours and we
should live like it. Be encouraged in the Lord today and know that He is
on your side and wishes for your Joy to be full. Recognize that and have
a merry spirit and try to enjoy each day to its fullest.

Read and meditate on these scriptures:

Proverbs 15:13-15 "A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by
sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. The heart of him that hath
understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on
foolishness. All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a
merry heart hath a continual feast."

Habakkuk 3:17-19 "Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall
fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields
shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there
shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will Joy
in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength, and He will make
my feet like hinds' feet, and He will make me to walk upon mine high places…"

Romans 12:10-16 "Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love;
in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in
spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation;
continuing instant in prayer; Distributing to the necessity of saints;
given to hospitality. Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Be of the
same mind one toward another…"

John 16:33 Jesus says,
"These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye
might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good
cheer; I have overcome the world."
