452nd -- A Place To Stand

We should never allow our circumstances to keep us from blossoming right
where we are. Many times we believe the lie that our sense of happiness,
joy and fulfillment is waiting for us in some future event that hasn't yet
taken place. We are to always keep in mind that tomorrow is promised to
no man and that today should be relished and enjoyed to its fullest. The
Bible declares in Nehemiah 8:10 “Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat
the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing
is prepared: for this day is Holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for
the Joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Hebrews 13:5-6) (Psalm 28:6-8)

We are to make the best of our situation no matter what it may be and use
to the fullest every asset that we possess. Encourage yourself to both
revel and excel right where you are, and by your positive actions your
attitude and outlook will reflect the steadfastness of your heart.

I hope you are encouraged and challenged by today's message to try your
best to enjoy today to its fullest and receive the blessings that come with
having the attitude of peace and joy.

A PLACE TO STAND

If you have ever gone through a toll booth, you know that your relationship
to the person in the booth is not the most intimate you'll ever have. It is
one of life's frequent non-encounters: You hand over some money; you might
get change; you drive off.

Late one morning in 1984, headed for lunch in San Francisco, I drove toward
a booth. I heard loud music. It sounded like a party. I looked around. No
other cars with their windows open. No sound trucks. I looked at the toll
booth. Inside it, the man was dancing.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“I'm having a party,” he said.

“What about the rest of the people?” I looked at the other toll booths.

He said, “What do those look like to you?” He pointed down the row of toll
booths.

“They look like...toll booths. What do they look like to you?”

He said, “Vertical coffins. At 8:30 every morning, live people get in.
Then they die for eight hours. At 4:30, like Lazarus from the dead, they
reemerge and go home. For eight hours, brain is on hold, dead on the job.
Just going through the motions.”

I was amazed. This guy had developed a philosophy, a mythology about his
job. Sixteen people dead on the job, and the seventeenth, in precisely the
same situation, figures out a way to live. I could not help asking the
next question: “Why is it different for you? You're having a good time.”

He looked at me. “I knew you were going to ask that. I don't understand why
anybody would think my job is boring. I have a corner office, glass on all
sides. I can see the Golden Gate, San Francisco, and the Berkeley hills.
Half the Western world vacations here...and I just stroll in every day and
practice dancing.”

Read and meditate on these scriptures:

Psalm 1:1-3 “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the
ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of
the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in His law
doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the
rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf
also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

Joshua 1:9 “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be
not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee
whithersoever thou goest.”

Psalm 28:6-8 “Blessed be the LORD, because He hath heard the voice of my
supplications. The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in
Him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my
song will I praise Him. The LORD is their strength, and He is the saving
strength of His anointed.”

Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath
begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

All of these scriptures can be found in the King James Version Bible.
